WASCZ House Unison 2019

School News December 23, 2019

On 13 December 2019, WASCZ hosted the fifth annual House Unison Competition in our Theatre. Each of the twelve houses presented two songs from the 1970s, one as an entire house unison song, the other a part song with selected members of the house. Every house was guided by a member of the Music Department, as well as Housemasters and tutors.

The event began with an opening performance by the Wycombe Abbey Singers, followed by last year’s winner of the boy’s houses, Newton House. Throughout the competition, pupils sang, played instruments, and showed their dancing talents to as enthusiastic crowd of their peers. Student announcers presented the songs and houses were introduced by our staff band, led by Mr Garfitt. The morning was full of exuberant singing, excited cheers, and colourful costumes.

The competition reached its culmination with Austen house, last year’s overall winner and winner of the girl’s houses. While the adjudicators, Mr Griffiths and Ms Kayayan, tallied up the totals, the entire school sang “Lean On Me,” led by Ms Deibert and the staff band. The pupils were relaxed and happy as this song signaled the end of a busy term and successful Unison Competition.

This year, Elgar house won for the boy’s houses, as well as the overall Unison Competition winner, with their rendition of “My Girl” by The Temptations, and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” by Elton JohnSomerville house won for the girl’s houses, with their rendition of “We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters, and “Car Wash” by Rose RoyceAlthough these pupils were very excited for their win, it was wonderful to see all pupils being supportive of each other’s efforts and talents.

The House Unison Competition is an important event for pupils to work as a team and bond as a house. Each year, the bar is raised and the showings from each house get stronger and stronger. This year was no exception. We are very proud of the pupils and look forward to next year’s competition.
