While at Wycombe Abbey International School pupils benefit, in the earlier years, from a blended curriculum of the best of Chinese and British education. In Secondary, the majority of the teaching is the British syllabus and all examinations at 16+ (IGCSE) and 18+ (A Levels) are the same as pupils studying in the UK. All classes, excepting Chinese, are taught in English.
IGCSE and A Level are the most widely recognised examination in the world and offer entry to all overseas universities. In addition to their Academic lessons pupils are prepared for IELTS (required for UK visas and University entrance), TOEFL, ACT, SAT, Common App (for US applications) and UCAS (for UK university admission). The School also guides and supports the pupils in their choices of subjects at school and university degree courses.
Class sizes are small - typically 20 - to enable high quality teaching and the ability to help pupils individually. For those who demonstrate good academic potential but whose English is not sufficiently strong to immediately access the British curriculum there are two educational programmes which focus on English. Classes on these programmes are even smaller, typically 8 or 15 depending on ability. Upon completion of these courses pupils then join the mainstream lessons.
A Pre A Level Foundation course (12 months) is also available. Pupils on this course study for a smaller number of IGCSE examinations (including English and Mathematics) before moving on to the 2 year A Level course.
All teachers are highly qualified and experienced. The majority come from the UK and all are from leading universities. The School publishes a full list of its Academic staff and their qualifications.
In addition to the compulsory components of the Chinese curriculum the following subjects are offered at IGCSE and A Level:
Accountancy, Art, Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, Computer Science, Drama, English (EAL), English (Language) English (Literature) Geography, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Music (ABRSM), Physics, Spanish. Pupils also have EPQ (Sixth Form - Yr12/13 only) and bespoke IELTS, TOEFL, Common App, SAT and ACT preparation classes.
To further support the intellectual development of pupils the school offers an extensive enrichment programme.
